Castello D'Evoli - Castropignano (Campobasso)

D'Evoli Castle - Castropignano

castello d'evoli 2

The ruins of D'Evoli Castle are perched high on a rock overlooking both the Biferno River and the Castel di Sangro-Lucera cattle-track. The current structure, built up on a former Samnites settlement replaced by Lombards afterwards, dates back to an 11th century building.

D'Evoli Family repeatedly altered the castle from the 14th century and till 1825, adding a hexagonal tower at first and a factory building afterwards (17th century). Before falling into decay, the castle had been a manorhouse until the beginning of the 20th century.

Nowadays its remnants still bear witness to its important past. It is a castle of a square plan showing the ruins both of a keep and of some towers, which were once part of a massive defense system. A ramp leads to the main entrance. Inside, the "Palatium" is divided from the rooms overlooking the valley.
